For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
John 3:16-17 (ESV)
God provides in all circumstances. In last Sunday’s Old Testament lesson, we learned how God provided for Abram and Sarai as they left their home in Haran to go to the land of Canaan. Through Abraham, God established a covenant for generations to come.
Our gracious God continues to provide for every generation. Through His Son, Jesus, God fulfilled his plan for the world’s salvation. As we watch Jesus’ willingly walk to his death this Lenten season, we once again see the unfolding of God’s plan for the most precious gift ever given—his Son; his only Son.
The amazing thing is that God’s plan includes me. Years ago, my church fashioned a cross of two Christmas tree trunks. As part of our Lenten program, we were given the opportunity to hammer our sins to that cross using a common cut nail. Using the hammer to pierce the trunk of our cross made such an impression on me. Those sins, my sins, are why Jesus was nailed to his cross.
God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, gives life to the dead, yes, even to one such as me.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you for all of your generous, forgiving grace.
May I walk with gratitude and obedience. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
